Tucked in a prominent block of ladies-who-lunch territory is this unapologetically divey watering hole for ladies (and men) who drink too much. Its neon sign is a familiar landmark set against a New York legend -- the flagship Bloomingdale's store. The Subway Inn isn't a bad place to stop in for a drink with a pallet of new purchases in tow, but it is certainly unexpected. The dark, perpetually open bar is a relic of Holly Golightly's New York, with its red leatherette booths, linoleum tabletops and checkerboard tile floor. Drink prices aren't quite as low as they were when Holly was stepping out on the town, but they're close. Avoid the house wine, which tastes of the feet that stomped the grapes, but the individually-wrapped champagne splits make a nice change of pace. Or try a classic cocktail like a sidecar or a stinger, to do honor to the age that made the Subway Inn famous. -- Adam Mazmanian
