Two Purdue University students have developed a Web site where users can list, rate and comment on several bars near college campuses across the United States.
The site www.collegebarscene.com lists several Kent bars including Glory Days, the Robin Hood and Screwy Louies. Each bars address, telephone number and hours of operation are included with the listings.
After clicking to view a particular bar, the user will be asked to respond to a questionnaire that will ultimately rate the affordability, smoke levels, attractiveness of the customers and overall rating of the bar. Currently, there are no ratings for any of the Kent bars listed on the site.
There are more than 1,800 bars listed on the Web site. The site prides itself on being the first online community created entirely for the purpose of college bars and the college bar scene. The top three bars currently listed on the site are Ruby Room in Austin, Texas; Slainte in Houston and Jakes Roadhouse in West Lafayette, Ind.
Brandon OBrien, a 22-year-old graphic technology student at Purdue University, launched the site on May 15 after a long drive to Indianapolis.
I was driving and thought the Web site would be a good resource for students who are visiting other schools, OBrien said. It gives you a heads up when you are looking for a new bar.
OBrien said the site usually generates more than 100,000 hits each month. There are currently 250 members of the site. Being a member means users have the ability to comment on bars and post forums. Membership is free; all that is needed is an e-mail address and a user ID.
Also included in the site is a section that allows users to browse an extensive database of mixed drink recipes. If you have your own mixed drink you may add your recipe to the site. Currently, the most popular drinks include the Godmother, the Strawberry Margarita and the White Russian.
Eric Johney, the co-founder of the site, is also a student at Purdue University. Johney hopes the site will be a good resource for students who are just turning 21.
I think this is a great place for students to visit, Johney said. Our theme is your No. 1 college resource.
